A POMPEII EVENING

I was wandering through the ruins of Pompeii at the time of day when shadows begin to lengthen, and a cool breeze comes off the bay. As I moved towards the House of the Vetii, I was aware of the scent of fresh baked bread and roasted fish from a farm adjoining the historical ruins. The aroma transported me back to a time when the city was alive. The air filled with the aroma of freshly cooked foods and the voices of men, women, and children. As I stood there lost in the moment, I could almost hear a ghostly voice say, "Tomorrow Valerius Severus is hosting a dinner party, and as always, the food and conversation will be beyond measure."
