A Welcoming Feast, England 1245

Shadows danced among the flickering lights of the torches. Servants under the direction of the household steward made last minute preparations in the great hall. The high table was covered in spotless white linen. Goblets, gold and silver plates, ewers for the wine and water stood ready on the buffet. In the upper gallery, musicians made last minute adjustments to their instruments, while jesters and acrobats finalized their moves. In the kitchen, roasts of meat and fowl turned on spits in front of the great fireplaces. In women's quarters, the mistress of the house was being dressed in her finery. Tonight was a feast to welcome home her husand safe returned from the wars.
