Dinner, and an Errand of Importance, 1775

The sun had set about an hour earlier. The moon showed clear in the dark, cloudless night. My breath and that of my horse was visible in the chill night air. Ahead was the Cock and Cat Tavern, its windows illuminated by the candles within. The warmth and the thought of a good supper outweighed my fears of possible detection by a hostile populace.  Upon entering, I found a seat in a darkened corner of the common room. The room was filled with local people, mostly farmers, mechanics, and some younger apprentices. Two men looked me over carefully as I ordered soup, pork pie, and a pint of ale. The food and the warmth soon put me in a drowsy mood. I don't remembver them leaving, but I should have.... It was late March in the year 1775, and I was on a mission of utmost importance for General Thomas Gage, military governor of Massachusetts...
